Thank you for your interest in volunteering with HSPCA. Our organization depends on dedicated volunteer support to help us fulfill our mission. We simply can’t do it without you!
So, how can you help?
There are many opportunities to become involved at HSPCA. Below are the positions we are currently trying to fill. Please indicate the areas where you’re interested in helping on the volunteer application.
Adoption Assistants: Assist adoption counselors by handing out applications, creating bags for adopters, making adoption packets, getting pets from kennels for guests, assisting guests to car with pet and supplies, pulling kennel cards, stocking adoption supply area and putting together cat carriers. There is also a need for people to help us make follow up calls after adoption. We especially need volunteers for peak weekend hours.
Cat Socializing Team: Spend time with cats and kittens giving them the love and attention they need as they wait for a home. Greet visitors and answer questions about our cats or help match potential adopters with the right cat for their home.
Dog Clean Up Team: Assist Animal Care Team by filling water dishes, sanitizing outdoor runs, checking kennels for needed repairs and informing appropriate staff, filling in holes in outdoor runs, distributing toys and treats as appropriate, and helping with laundry and dishes.
Dog Socializing Team: Provide shelter dogs with love, companionship, exercise and training. Teach basic skills and help our dogs become more adoptable and find homes more quickly. This position is for those 16 and older. Children under 16 may volunteer with a parent while they train our dogs, but will not be able to be in control of the pet.
Fix KC Clinics: Once a month, “Sunday” clinics conducted to spay/neuter feral and free roaming cats are facilitated at the HSPCA Animal Medical Center. Participate as a member of the team to provide exemplary care to the cats including laundry, clean kennels, monitor recovering cats, transport animals from surgery to recovery area, assist with administrative duties and more.
Foster Care Team: Work closely with our team to provide in-home care for our pets that need a little extra TLC. Must have a current State of Kansas Foster License or pay $10 to have one processed through HSPCA. For more information, email fostering@heartlandspca.org.
Free Roaming Cat Program: Work with the HERO Program Manager to provide hands on trapping assistance for feral/free roaming cat colonies in the Greater Kansas City area. All volunteers for this program will need to complete basic TNR training to be certified to participate as a program trapper. Duties may also include working with caregivers to mitigate nuisance complaints. Training is provided, and more information can be obtained by emailing HERO@heartlandspca.org.
General Office Support: Assist office team by entering information regarding pets into applicable web sites or databases and performing general office duties such as filing or folding letters for mailings.
Medical Center Support: Work closely with our team to provide hands-on animal care and support functions at the HSPCA Animal Medical Center including laundry, clean kennels, open syringes, make paper shreds, transport animals from surgery to recovery cages, walk dogs, feed dogs and cats and a variety of other duties that help us provide exemplary care to the patients we serve.
Meet & Greet Team: Assist Animal Care Team and office teams by greeting guests upon arrival to facility and directing to the appropriate area, facilitating guest/pet interaction, answering questions regarding the pet using information contained on kennel cards and/or owner surrender sheets, directing other questions to a member of the team, answering questions about adoption procedures, fees and specials. We especially need volunteers for peak weekend hours.
Off-Site Events Support: Assist at mobile adoption and community outreach events by handling pets, providing customer service, preparing paperwork for events and talking to the public about the many services we provide. Most of our off-site events are on the weekends.
Reception: Assist by answering phones and providing general information about HSPCA using provided script, directing calls to the appropriate team member, taking and distributing messages.
Special Events: Assist with our fundraising events through committee leadership, solicitation, day-of support and more. Duties will be assigned by the Special Events Manager and could include managing teams, soliciting donations or sponsorships, designing décor, assisting guests, envelope stuffing, going to the post office, applying address labels to envelopes, making decorations, etc. These events are scheduled throughout the year at various times and locations.
