Hello, I’m Miss Dixie, and I’ve won the award for Miss Personality here at the shelter! Look into my big, beautiful eyes and you won’t know what hit you! After you’re mesmerized, we can spend some time people/cat watching. My favorite spots are up high, so I can get to know everyone before we meet. I’m silly like that, but like I said – it’s all about personality. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to hang out and watch the world go by (having a big window would be great), but I love to spend time with the one I love – preferably while rolling over and being scratched! Azure is a stunning young cat who was thrown out of a car with her sisters Aries and Brooke. Luckily, an employee saw this happen and grabbed Aries and Azure (who squatted like they had never touched grass) right away. Brooke was found a few days later in a drain pipe. Azure is loving and sweet and wants a home where she can enjoy basking in the window sunlight. Please consider Azure and possibly one of her sisters to come home and brighten your life!

1000 Pets Receive the Gift of Health

UPDATED 3/26/2012: At the completion of the last FREE vaccination clinic this past Saturday, March 24th, over 1000 pets have received the gift of health this month.

These clinics were a huge success! This Saturday alone, 505 pets were vaccinated. Our staff and volunteers saw all ages, size and breeds. We were able to schedule many pets for spay / neuter surgeries and even detected a heart murmur in a dog, who will be returning for treatment. After these last two weekends it has become truly clear that this service is a necessity for so many.

Pets of all shapes and sizes found their way to HSPCA’s Animal Medical Center today. The first of two FREE vaccination clinics was held this Saturday March 17th 2012. A tremendous team of staff and volunteers was ready to give the gift of health to as many pets as possible.

Although the line was long and started early the pets, and their human companions, waited patiently for their turn to receive lifesaving vaccinations. Thanks to generous funding from the ASPCA, HSPCA was able to vaccinate almost 400 pets.

The second, and last, FREE vaccination clinic will be held next Saturday March 24th from 10am – 2pm. No appointment is needed.

Vinnie and his sister Lily had been together for the past 6 years, and they came to Heartland SPCA when their owner had to move. Vinnie and Lily love to spend the day lounging in the bed, looking out the window, or playing with their scratch pads. They’re just the perfect cats – they like to play with other cats, dogs, and even the kid that was in their family! Lily has since been adopted, so if you’ve got the purrfect forever home for Vinnie, one with plenty of playmates, come to HSPCA to adopt him today.

Spring brings a need for foster families and supplies

Springtime at HSPCA brings green grass, warm breezes, more outdoor play time, and an influx of puppies and kittens. As the need to shelter and care for these new arrivals grows, unfortunately the walls of the shelter do not. Lucky for these little guys, HSPCA has an army of compassionate volunteers that serve as foster families during these warmer months and beyond. While we may not be able to expand our kennel space during “puppy and kitten season”

HSPCA foster families allow us to care for the additional 25% of pets that arrive during this season. Foster families open their hearts and homes up to pets who are too young to be placed up for adoption, need a place to heal, a break from shelter life or that bit of extra care. The average stay for pets in foster care is three weeks; although some stay longer and others have a shorter visit. HSPCA will provide all the supplies and coaching needed to care for the pet.

Alongside the need for extra space, springtime brings the need of extra supplies. KMR kitten formula, bottles, and puppy pads are needed in addition to the canned pet food, clay kitty litter, treats and Kong toys that always grace our wish list. HSPCA relies on our generous donors to help supplement these extra supplies.
